Standard Orbit: A Star Trek Original Series Podcast

Montalban v. Cumberbatch

"
Khan Noonien Singh is the most dangerous adversary the Enterprise ever faced. He is brilliant, ruthless and he will not hesitate to kill every single one of you." Those are the words Ambassador Spock used to describe Star Trek's most iconic villain, and in this episode of Standard Orbit our...Khanversation revolves around who makes a better Khan, Montalban or Cumberbatch? We're going to look at the Khans from the perspective of character, screen presence, passion, and villainy. A Khanparison if you will.

The Kelvin Timeline did not branch off from the Prime Timeline until 2233, so the Khan we meet in Into Darkness is truly the same Khan we meet in Space Seed. However, the circumstances surrounding their revivals are very different, which inform the character and his actions moving forward in both timelines. We delve into the drives and motivations of each, which Khan was a "greater" villain, the screen presence of both of the incredible actors who portrayed him. And it wouldn't be an episode of Standard Orbit without a few tangents for good measure.

The Alternative Factor.

The Alternative Factor is rather infamous in Star Trek fandom, and there are many factors (see what we did there?) and behind-the-scenes reasons for why things turned out the way they did.  Who better to join us in our discussion on this episode than host of Melodic Treks Brandon Shea-Mutula, known for his unique taste when it comes to Star Trek, and who makes his case for why The Alternative Factor is one of his favorites!

We talk band-aids, beards, parallel universes, Jet Li's The One, and so much more, including all the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding The Alternative Factor, in this week's episode of Standard Orbit. Also, our iTunes giveaway has been extended to December 15, there's still time to win a Star Trek: The Next Generation's first season on Blu-ray!

Star Trek Beyond on Home Video.

November 1, 2016 marked the release of Star Trek Beyond on home video, and there have been several versions made available to consumers. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Norman C. Lao returns to help us break down what makes each release unique and pros, cons, and differences between them!

Has a replica of the USS Franklin been on your wishlist? Do you like the way SteelBooks display on your shelf? Is behind-the-scenes material more your area of interest? These are all important factors to consider before deciding which version of Star Trek Beyond to get on Blu-ray. Target, Amazon, or Best Buy...where should you make your purchase? Ultimately that's for you to decide but we do our best to educate you into making the most informed decision!

146: Remove the Gangster, Put in a Casino
We had such a fun time transposing first season TNG episodes to fourth season TOS episodes, we thought we'd do it again! This time we're looking at the Next Generation's second season for potential adventures that could've easily been part of The Original Series' fifth.

Could Uhura have been the mother of The Child? What if Harry Mudd was The Outrageous Okana? Double the Shantner, double the fun in Time Squared? And could the much maligned Shades of Gray actually made for a fitting conclusion to the five year mission in 1971? All this and a few fun tangents as usual in this episode of Standard Orbit.
