Standard Orbit 202: Trek Wars

Star Trek vs. Star Wars.

Merry Christmas and a happy Star Wars season to you all! In honor of December now officially being Star Wars month, we thought it would be fun to pit the two trilogies of the George Lucas Star Wars saga against the six movies of the TOS cast and crew.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore don't settle the  great Star Trek vs. Star Wars debate one and for all, but they at least have a good time talking about that other Star franchise. It's their present to each other and the listeners this Christmas. May the Force be with you!

Star Trek Continues.

The Original Series quite infamously was never able to complete the five year mission that was promised in its opening credits. This sly attempt by Gene Roddenberry to will a five season run of his new series into existence by mere narration was unfortunately not to be. In recent years many Star Trek fan productions have taken it upon themselves to complete the mission, and this month Star Trek Continues has done exactly that.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, Zach Moore is joined by host of Continuing Mission Tony Robinson to discuss this fan favorite fan series now that it's concluded, how it fits in with TOS, and also tease an exciting new collaboration coming soon to Trek.fm!

The Making of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by Tony Black to discuss the making of Star Trek V as told by William Shatner and his daughter Lisabeth in their respective books "Captain's Log: William Shatner's Personal Account of the Making of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" and "Star Trek Movies Memories."

We talk the cons and pros of what many consider to be the worst film of the franchise, the many obstacles that Shanter faced trying to translate his ambitious ideas to the screen, where we rank The Final Frontier in the Star Trek movie canon, and much more. Stay tuned till the very end for a great Sean Connery impression by Tony!

Standard Orbit 196: Star Trek Origins: Season 3

Iconic Star Trek in Season 3.

We've had an ongoing miniseries on Standard Orbit we've called "Star Trek Origins" where we explore certain touchstones both real and fictional that became defining focal points for the franchise for years to come. You can find these previous discussions in Standard Orbit 139, 145 and 161 and this week we're back at it again!

In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by author and critic Darren Mooney to examine how the often maligned third season is responsible for a lot of what we now deem iconic Star Trek. Honorable Klingons, Klingon/Romulan coexistence, ladykiller Kirk...the list goes on!

Standard Orbit 195: It's A Death Machine

The Transporter.

The transporter is at the same time one of the most remarkable and terrifying pieces of technology featured in Star Trek. It dissembles its subjects at a molecular level, converts their matter into energy, then reassembles as matter at their new location. Would you be willing to go through the process?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss if they themselves would be willing to use a transporter, whether or not it is a death machine, and its many uses that go beyond what was intended by Starfleet engineers.

Catspaw Commentary.

Happy Halloween! If Star Trek ever had a Halloween episode, it was Catspaw. The first episode produced for the second season, it's probably for the best it was held back a few weeks to come out the week of Halloween in 1967. Amok Time, the first episode broadcast for the second season, is one of Star Trek's best episodes. This...is not.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined by Brandon-Shea Mutala for a commentary on what is widely considered one of The Original Series' worst episodes. Does it live up to its woeful reputation, or is it more treat than trick after all? Join us and find out!

Shuttlecraft in TOS.

As we see across the Star Trek franchise, a flight in a Federation shuttle craft is probably the riskiest thing you can do in the 23rd and 24th centuries. While it set the standard for all future "stranded in a shuttlecraft" stories with The Galileo Seven, TOS used its shuttles in more ways than just that and in this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss all such instances in The Original Series and the films.

Did TOS shuttles have warp drive? How easy is it to steal a shuttlecraft? Why take a shuttle when you could just use the transporter? These questions and much more as well as Zach's plug for a guest spot on To The Journey!

Trials in TOS.

The Star Trek franchise has an excellent track record with courtroom dramas, and of course TOS is where it all started. In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore discuss the many trials and court martials that took place over The Original Series and the films.

The conversation takes many turns including favorite courtroom drama TV series, the minutia of dress uniforms, and to the role of the death penalty in the Star Trek future. And you read that right, Zach is back!

Standard Orbit 192: Ape Face has the Conn
TOS and Planet of the Apes: How could one be the other?

In this episode of Standard Orbit: Nic Anastassiou, Amy Nelson and Ken Tripp talk about the idea of taking two great franchises who came into being in the same time-frame and meshing the two very different views of the future.

As fans of both franchises and fans of both Roddenberry and Serling; could an episode of the original series be constructed to incorporate the Planet of the Apes. Nic, Amy, and Ken come up with creative scenarios that explore combining the elements. Would it be an alien putting our crew in a different universe? Could it be a timeline disconnect? Could be a warning of complacency or a piece of what made Earth a utopia that fell apart? Enjoy this creative episode of Standard Orbit!

Standard Orbit 189: Into Darkness-There is Trek in You!
There is Trek in Darkness

In this episode of Standard Orbit: Ken reviews the best scenes that personify Star Trek within Into Darkness. From Captain Pike's interest in Kirk's success, Spock's response to discipline, and the incredible speech at the end of the movie; Into Darkness has its Star Trek moments.

Many fans feel Star Trek Into Darkness failed to meet expectations and it was just another high speed sci-fi action movie. Many felt the film didn't take the time to incorporate the elements long time fans were craving in the re-boots. While that is true in certain aspects; Star Trek Into Darkness may have some of the better character moments of the new movies. Enjoy listening to the key scenes that epitomize Star Trek and please let us know your opinions on the Babel Conference.

The Journey through TOS

Kay Shaw joins Ken Tripp this week to discuss her recent journey through the original series. Kay grew up with TNG, VOY, and Enterprise. Over the last few months she has been viewing TOS for the first time. A fresh perspective on the foundational series.

Ken and Kay discuss the interesting aspect of going from the "modern" series back to where it all began. What was it like seeing the show for the very first time and does it hold up after all these years? Kay brings a great and fun perspective to the show. We hope you enjoy the journey through the series and movies strengths and opportunities as well as the great conversation with one of Trek.FM' s favorite podcasters.

Is there money in the 23rd century? Reports may vary, but it certainly still exists in the here and now. For as long as the Star Trek franchise has been in existence, advertisers have been tapping into its cross culture popularity to sell their own products, which has lead to some very enjoyable advertisements over the years.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore play and reflect on some of the most entertaining and memorable television commercials featuring the Star Trek brand, from William Shatner pitching a Commodore VIC-20 to Quicken Loans helping a Vulcan secure a homestead.

Standard Orbit 179: I Had Your Sash

Errand of Mercy.

While considered the big bad of The Original Series, the Klingons only appear in a handful of episodes. The first of which not coming until the tail end of the first season. Despite this, they made quite the impression and John Colicos' Kor became the template all future members of his species...until maybe Christopher Lloyd's Kruge.

In this episode of Standard Orbit, host Zach Moore is joined Trek.fm Content Manager Justin Oser to break down what works, what doesn't, and what we wanted to see more of in Errand of Mercy. Also to bookend the conversation, a bit of Kelvin Timeline and The Next Generation talk as they tie into Justin's recent resurgent Trek fandom.

Standard Orbit 178: The Gospel According to Star Trek

Author Kevin C. Neece Interview.

On first glance, the Christian worldview and the humanistic worldview of Star Trek would seem to have nothing in common. After all Star Trek takes place in a future when religion has essentially vanished from Earth. In that case, how can there even be a "gospel according to Star Trek"?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore are joined by author and speaker Kevin C. Neece to answer that very question. Through The Gospel According to Star Trek book series and his The Undiscovered Country Project, Kevin poses questions about the spiritual significance of Star Trek as both popular art and cultural phenomenon from a Christian perspective.

Standard Orbit 177: Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold

Revenge Stories.

As the old Klingon proverb goes, "Revenge is a dish best served cold." When it comes to Star Trek, it seems revenge is a dish best served again and again. It's a story trope the that franchise frequently revisits for better or for worse; sometimes you get The Wrath of Khan, sometimes you get Turnabout Intruder.
In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore examine the many instances where revenge drives the narrative of TOS episodes, movies and reboots, which motivations are more relatable than others, and what Star Trek tries to teach us through these extreme examples of obsession and vengeance.

Standard Orbit 176: Time Traveling Without a License

The Temporal Violations of James T. Kirk.

In the fan favorite DS9 episode "Trials and Tribble-ations," the Department of Temporal Investigations laments over James T. Kirk having the largest record of temporal violations on file; seventeen to be exact. We might not have seen all of them on screen, but Kirk did indeed often find himself in time periods that were not his own.
In this episode of Standard Orbit, hosts Ken Tripp and Zach Moore take the time to travel through Kirk and co.'s many escapees across the space time continuum, the mechanisms that brought them backward and forward through time, and the various schools of thought on time travel itself.

Standard Orbit 175: Continually Breaking Continuity

Continuity Conundrums in TOS

With the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery hitting the Internet the fan reaction has been divisive. For a series that reportedly takes place in the Prime Timeline around the same time as The Cage, things don't exactly jibe. How could Star Trek contradict its own continuity so blatantly? Well...it's happened before.

Ken and Zach are joined by patron Nic Anastassiou to discuss some of their favorite continuity conundrums in the canon of TOS, as well as if breaks in established canon are truly deal breakers for enjoying a well told story. It's all in good fun this week on Standard Orbit, and Nic coins a new term that will now become part of Trek.Fm canon: PreOS!

Standard Orbit 174: Battle of the Battles

Battle of the Mutara Nebula Vs. Battle of Khitomer

Star Trek was never about big space battles but the movies, as well as the series, had some pretty intense skirmishes. In this week's Standard Orbit: we look at two big battles from the TOS movie timeline: TWOK's Battle of the Mutara Nebula and TUC's Battle of Khitomer.

Zach Moore is still off filming in an undisclosed location. Earl Grey's Richard Marquez joins me to discuss these two exciting scenes and compare the differences in approach, scale, tactics, and outcome. We talk about a possible different scenario for the Battle of Khitomer as well. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of Standard Orbit and share your insights and opinions on the Babel Conference.

Standard Orbit 173: Full Motion Picture

Why Star Trek The Motion Picture Works

Excerpt (iTunes Subtitle)
This week on Standard Orbit we dive into the areas of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. What worked well, where were the gaps, and why this movie is growing in popularity as time passes.

Long time TMP advocate Ken is joined by another outspoken fan of the movie, Aaron Harvey, co-hosting while Zach is off filming the Green Berets. Aaron and Ken step back from their biases and discuss the various aspects of this picture. They connect the relationship to the original TV show through to the sequels and on to The Next Generation. Permission to come aboard is granted; as it is time to leave space dock and warp into a another fun episode of Standard Orbit.

Will Stape Interview.

The Original Series was a very provocative series for its time often pushing the envelope in many categories. In this episode of Standard Orbit, Will Stape joins us to discuss the portrayal of love, relationships and sexuality in TOS as examined in his recent book, "Star Trek Sex: Analyzing the Most Sexually Charged Episodes of the Original Series."

Will is also one of a select few freelance writers who sold scripts to The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine back in the days of Star Trek's open script submission policy. He shares the inspiration and production stories behind his episodes Homeward and Prophet Motive!

And The Children Shall Lead Commentary.

What is the worst episode of The Original Series? Some say Spock's Brain, some say The Alternative Factor, but we all know the real answer...And The Children Shall Lead. In this episode of Standard Orbit, we provide a commentary on this infamous hour of TOS, so let us be your companions the next time you rewatch Attorney Melvin Belli try to take over the Enterprise.

Ken is off shooting The Green Berets, so Zach has summoned Brandon the Friendly Cohost to join him for this journey of ring around the rosie, knives in space, rapid aging, and replicated ice cream. As you believe, so shall you do!

Movie Sequels to TOS Episodes. When Harve Bennett took the reins of the Star Trek franchise after The Motion Picture, he famously watched all 79 episodes of The Original Series to both familiarize himself with the show as well as mine it for potential sequel ideas. He zeroed in on Space Seed and the rest is history, but what if he'd picked something else?

In this episode of Standard Orbit, Ken and Zach each share their top three TOS episodes they would've liked to see movie sequels to. They also shout out to Standard Orbit's ever growing ranks of associate producers and read more listener email!

Fifty years on, how do some of these more ambitious creature designs hold up? How do later reinventions of aliens like the Gorn and the Tholians in Enterprise compare to their original incarnations? And the real question of the day, does the Mugato enrich the tapestry of Star Trek?

Starship in Peril.

How often has the Enterprise been in peril from the series through the movies? Zach and Ken have the answer as they explore the episodes and movies where our beloved Starship was in jeopardy of being destroyed (and in one case; it was destroyed).

Whether it was a giant hand in space, self destruct, powerful  beings, advanced aliens, or those pesky Romulans and Klingons; the Starship Enterprise has it's share of close calls. Based on a listener suggestion; Zach and Ken provide a run down on the circumstances and the methods used to save everyone's favorite starship.

Standard Orbit 165: Star Trek At Its Best

Revisiting the TOS Film Era.

In this age of franchises and sequels one could easily take the six TOS films for granted, but they are what many consider to be Star Trek at its best. In this episode of Standard Orbit, friend of the network Tony Black joins Zach to discuss their shared love of the TOS film era.

Releasing six films over twelve years is no easy feat, which is even more impressive when you consider there was no franchise road map or master plan. This singular focus of storytelling lead to a wide variety of films unmatched by any other franchise, and we celebrate that while part of a greater whole, each story stands alone as a unique, satisfying and self contained experience.

Standard Orbit 164: The Con of Wrath

Ultimate Fantasy 1982

Dr. Trek himself, Larry Nemecek joins Zach and Ken as we discuss his forthcoming documentary The Con of Wrath as well as Star Trek conventions then and now.

Long time Star Trek writer, author, publisher, and historian; Larry Nemecek talks about his first documentary about the legendary 1982 Houston Star Trek convention that devolved into quite the fiasco. He interviews several of the cast and production crew who were involved including the last interview ever given by the late Harve Bennett.

What would a new version Standard Orbit be without our famous tangents? We review the size and origins of Star Trek conventions right up to the current day. Prepare yourselves for the influx of Trek fandom we receive when Dr. Trek explores this universe like no else.

Tales from the Set of Star Trek Into Darkness.

Jon Lee Brody is an actor, writer, director and producer but more importantly in terms of Star Trek...a redshirt! In this episode of Standard Orbit, Jon shares his experiences of breaking into the film business, directing his own short film, and playing a security officer in Star Trek Into Darkness.

From inside jokes with JJ Abrams to breaking the ice with Simon Pegg, Jon recounts some great stories from his time on set. We also talk in depth about his short film Police Guys, and have a solid tangent about the DC Comics universe on film and television.

161: Origins: USS Enterprise

Standard Orbit 161: Origins-USS Enterprise

The Storied History of the Real Ships named Enterprise

In 1964, Gene Roddenberry pitched a show about the Starship Yorktown under the Command of Captain Robert April exploring strange new worlds. As the show evolved the name of the ship was changed to Enterprise. Though there is nothing in the show history that tells us exactly why the name of the ship was changed, Zach and Ken explore the reason and the recent history of two incredible real life ships named Enterprise that could have influenced the decision.

Prepare yourselves for some really interesting history and some awesome parallels between our beloved starship and the accomplishments of the historical ships. We also are able to discuss the feasibility of so many older class starships continuing their service across the TNG and DS9 timelines. Sit back and enjoy learning why "history will never forget the name; Enterprise!

Standard Orbit 159: Star of Freedom and Peace

Uhura and Her Actresses.

Nyota Upenda Uhura is a truly beautiful name that translates to "star of freedom and peace." In this episode of Standard Orbit we discuss the impact of Uhura and how she has evolved as a character over the years from TOS and its movies, to the Kelvin Timeline, and even in fan productions such as Star Trek Continues.

Ken and Zach recount their personal encounters with Nichelle Nichols and Kim Stinger, as well as discuss the rise of Zoe Saldana as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today, and how each actress has carried the mantle of Uhura with class.

158: Too Hot for TV

The BBC Banned Episodes.

When Miri first broadcast in the UK in 1970 it caused such a stir that not only did the BBC take it off the airwaves for decades, but three other episodes (Plato's Stepchildren, The Empath and Whom Gods Destroy) were completely banned until 1990! In this episode of Standard Orbit we explore British vs. American censorship and sensibilities when it comes to entertainment, and what we think might've made these episodes too hot for TV in the UK.

Could the graphic depictions of disease and torture have gone too far in Miri and The Empath? Might the legendary interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura have factored into the decision to ban Plato's Stepchildren? What's so offensive about Whom Gods Destroy? What other notable censorship edits did the BBC make to the episodes the did broadcast? All this as well as Ken and Zach's thoughts on two modern day sitcoms they just can't stand.

154: By Any Other Name

Standard Orbit 154: By Any Other Name

What is in a name? What is in a title? Zach and Ken explore the more interesting episode titles of the original series and "try" to correlate the names to the plots of the episodes. In some cases; they're an easy match. In other cases; there isn't a direct link as to what the episode was about. In a very humbling moment for Ken--confusion on a title and actual episode becomes apparent. No editing here-Ken owns his error and makes for some good fun at his own expense.

Zach and Ken explore all the more interesting titles and ask for your input as to what some of these titles mean to you and how you have been interpreting them. Ken and Zach put out a host of theories and reveal the history of some of these lines from great literature.
